Human Design compatibility: how two charts actually connect
Human Design has no compatibility score. It has something more useful: a mechanical description of what happens between two specific charts, channel by channel. Any app handing you a percentage made that number up.
Why the percentage does not exist
Astrology has a long tradition of synastry scoring, and it has leaked into Human Design tools that borrow the aesthetic. The system itself does not rank pairings. It describes circuitry: your chart has certain channels defined, theirs has others, and when you are in a room together the combined chart is different from either one alone. That combined picture is what there is to read, and it is specific rather than scored.
This matters practically. A "68% match" tells you nothing you can act on. "You complete each other's 34-57 channel, and she carries the whole 37-40 that you have neither gate of" tells you where the pull is and where you are receiving rather than transmitting.
The four connection mechanics
Electromagnetic: the pull
You have one gate of a channel, they have the other. The channel does not exist in either chart alone and switches on when you are together. This is the classic attraction mechanic, and it is also why some relationships feel electric and slightly destabilising: you are experiencing a definition that is not yours to keep. When the person leaves the room, that channel goes quiet again.
Companionship: the comfort
You both carry the whole channel. Nothing new is created, and nothing is negotiated: you simply operate the same way in that theme. Companionship channels are the low-friction parts of a relationship, the places where you do not have to explain yourself. Many companionship connections and few electromagnetic ones tends to feel easy and calm rather than charged.
Compromise: the friction
One of you has the whole channel; the other has exactly one of its two gates. The person with the full channel sets the terms of that theme every time, and the one with the half gate adapts without usually noticing. This is where recurring arguments live, and naming it is most of the fix: it is not a character failing, it is asymmetric circuitry.
Dominance: the teaching
One of you has the whole channel; the other has neither gate. There is no negotiation available, so the transmission runs one way. In practice it feels like teaching, mentorship, or occasionally being conditioned without consent. Between a parent and a child it is usually the most important connection in the chart.
Centre conditioning, which is separate
Alongside channels, compare the nine centres. Wherever one of you is defined and the other is open, the open one feels and amplifies that energy in the other's presence. If your Solar Plexus is open and theirs is defined, you will experience their emotional wave as if it were your own weather, every time you are together. Knowing that turns a confusing dynamic into a fact you can work with.

Doing this for a real pair
By hand it means two accurate charts and a pass through all 36 channels, classifying each one. It is completely doable on paper and tedious enough that most people do it once.

You need the other person's birth date, time and place. If you do not know their exact time, noon is the convention, with the same caveat as any chart: a gate near a boundary can land the wrong side of it.
What Human Design cannot tell you
Whether to stay. Whether they are good for you. Whether it will last. The chart describes mechanics, not outcomes, and any reading that claims otherwise has left the system. Two people with abundant electromagnetic connection can be a disaster together, and a pair with almost no channel connection can be perfectly happy. What the chart gives you is a vocabulary for what you already feel.
